Rotational Spine Protector

The Problem
The RSP system is designed to be a more affective way of preventing spinal injuries. Unlike a conventional sports back protector which only prevents direct spinal impacts, the RSP system prevents over rotation of the spine, which makes up to 5x more injuries than direct impacts.

How to Prevent Rotational Injuries?
The RSP system prevents hyperextension of the spine by creating a locking system which stops a rotation before it reaches the critical point during the event of a crash.

Medical Research
In collaboration with the Medical University of Graz, cadavers were used to determine breaking strain of the spine, which was helpful to supplement other date in order to work out the best factor of safety for the protector.

B2B
The RSP is intended as a business to business product, much like MIPS. It could easily be added to an existing back protector as an extra level of safety.

Hardware in the loop fed Generative Design
Implementation of sensors in current protectors. This data was fed back into Autodesks generative design software, in order to determine where the force is being transmitted during impact.

Test Bed
A full sized test bed was also designed and produced in order to accurately test prototype systems as well as recording data which could be fed back into Autodesk's generative design system.
